Moisture-dependent Water Repellency of Greenlandic Cultivated Soils

چکیده

The rapid warming of the Arctic is changing conditions for agricultural activity in southwest Greenland markedly, which necessitates studies physical properties soil resource. Soil water repellency (SWR) a property that changes functional behaviour across soil-specific range water-content (W). Although SWR occurs worldwide, it has not been studied sub-arctic pasture and grass fields. Thus, aim was to examine prevalence South establish pedotransfer functions on are faster measure than SWR, i.e. organic fractions, texture retention. This study included 145 samples from 22 fields distributed three areas Greenland, with broad distributions (clay: 0.017–0.194 kg kg−1) carbon (OC) (0.009–0.241 contents. degree as function content (SWR-W curve) measured oven-dry at became hydrophilic (WNON), total (SWRAREA) calculated integrated trapezoidal area SWR-W curve. A 99% 98% were water-repellent extremely repellent their maximum respectively. Among fractions (OC, Loss-on-ignition 550 °C, 225 °C (LOI550 LOI225)), LOI550 best predictor SWRAREA WNON (both r2 = 0.93). Multiple linear regressions including clay increased r2adj 0.92 0.95 OC LOI550, Campbell-Shiozawa (CS) model fitted soil–water retention curves (pF 3.0–6.9), inverse slope (−α−1) CS exhibited high correlation both (r2adj 0.87) 0.93), thus suggesting governs SWR. Lastly, shown coefficient proportionality between these soils coincided New Zealand.

Investigation of compounds causing water repellency in the rhizosphere of sandy soils from a wide range of locations

Although soils are generally considered to wet readily, some are actually water repellent at the surface and in the rhizosphere. This phenomenon occurs at low to moderate moisture contents and has been reported from soils under a range of vegetation types and from many regions around the globe. Water repellency in soils can have serious environmental implications including reduced seed germinat...

The Impact of Diesel Oil Pollution on the Hydrophobicity and CO2 Efflux of Forest Soils

The contamination of soil with petroleum products is a major environmental problem. Petroleum products are common soil contaminants as a result of human activities, and they are causing substantial changes in the biological (particularly microbiological) processes, chemical composition, structure and physical properties of soil. The main objective of this study was to assess the impact of soil ...

Oxygen supply to plant roots in cultivated mineral soils

Roots of all plant species need oxygen for growth, and most crops are supplied with oxygen mainly from soil air. Poor aeration is generally a problem only in wet soils. In compacted soils both large mechanical impedance and poor aeration inhibit the growth of roots and may lead to yield reductions. In this study, the variation in soil air composition, N2O emission and several environmental vari...
